Fears & Phobias. There are hundreds of different fears & phobias known to us. All of them limit our lives in some way or the other. Some of the examples of common fears are Claustrophobia, Hydrophobia, fear of flying, fear of public speaking, fear of darkness, fear of death etc. Though fears and phobias seem to be very similar to each other, they are quite different. Fear is a natural response to danger. When our mind perceives danger, sympathetic nervous system produces adrenaline.
It prepares us to fight or to run away. This is called fight and flight response, heart rate increases, blood rushes to our larger muscles, blood sugar increases and we are ready to respond to an emergency. In case of phobia, fear is unreasonable, irrational response to different objects, situations or activities. All phobias are faulty beliefs which are associated with strong physiological responses. Distress is so intense that person is ready to do anything to avoid the situation. They realize its irrational but cannot change the response.
Phobias restrict our lives. Some of the symptoms are :
- Sweating
- Breathlessness
- Increase in heart rate
- Trembling, shaking
- Discomfort in chest area
- Panic
- Discomfort or pain in stomach area
- Choking feeling
- Tingling sensation
- Losing control
- Fainting
There are 3 categories of Phobias :
- Specific (animal phobia, natural environment phobia, such as fear of heights or water, situation phobia, like claustrophobia, fear of flying, fear of dentist, etc).
- Social (fear of different social or performance situations, such as public speaking)
- Agoraphobia (fear of certain places, perceived to be unsafe and difficult to escape. Person suffering from agoraphobia finds it difficult to go out of the house, or going out in open spaces)
